I assembled my initial PC using a rog z 690e gaming motherboard paired with an i9 12900k and a 4080 GPU. I noticed my GPU is limited to x8 performance because the M.2 slot I used for the operating system shares the same bus as the GPU. My question is whether I can simply move the OS to another M.2 slot and use a third one for game storage to enable the GPU to run at full speed without affecting the OS.

It seems like you're confirming a solution. The best outcome would be adjusting your boot sequence in the BIOS settings.

Considering the trade-off, you're weighing a higher performance option against additional storage. If you skip the extra storage and stick with the 4080 in x8, you might not notice much difference in gaming performance. However, opting for another 980 Pro would boost it, but you're questioning whether that gain is worth leaving behind the extra capacity.
