I’m not sure if you should go for the i7 9700k or the Ryzen 7 3700X. You’re thinking about using an RTX 2070 at 1440p resolution. The i7 is pricier, but the Z390 boards are more affordable, making Intel the better deal overall. Since you mainly play games and only run VMs for non-gaming work, the performance difference won’t be huge.

3700x offers the 9700k chip, but it's quite similar to other models. If the cost of the motherboard is deterring you, consider the B450 Tomahawk MAX.

I'm a bit concerned about fitting the Ryzen CPU into its socket. This is my first time putting together PCs, and I've only changed thermal paste on an Intel CPU before.

Discussing IPC versus threads, I lean toward supporting more threads. Smooth 120fps gameplay is better than stuttering at 144fps. B450 boards are sufficient.

You have no reason to believe that a lack of HT will always cause stuttering in games. 9700k is fine.

I don’t have specific tests or data to share, but observations from others and expert insights suggest a better frame timing on average for 3700x threads compared to lower counts. After upgrading from an i5-8500 to an 8700k, the increase in threads did noticeably impact performance.

I’m planning to get the 2070s and picked a CPU in April. I’m considering holding off on Ryzen 4xxx and Intel 10th gen releases.
