The only thing I notice with Copilot+ is that the CPU must have an NPU of at least 40TOPS. There are no other minimum hardware requirements mentioned, such as a specific RAM amount. I own a Copilot laptop and the main difference from a non-Copilot one is the dedicated Copilot key. When I press it, it simply launches the Copilot app in the start menu, which can also be accessed via a mouse.
The Copilot AI will operate on the NPU rather than being hosted in the cloud via Microsoft. The minimum requirement is 16GB of RAM. It's surprising that a strong GPU isn't used for Copilot+, since the RTX 4090 likely offers more capability than an NPU.
For x86 does Copilot+ do anything yet? Specifically, has MS implemented support for AMD/Intel NPUs, or Nvidia GPUs? As far as I'm aware that has not happened yet. In a quick search around, the nearest thing to a date I've seen is an MS blog mentioning November for Ryzen AI 300 and Lunar Lake, although other MS pages only say this year. There's also a 3rd party article saying Nvidia laptop dGPU support Q4. Maybe we'll get some of that in tomorrow's Windows Update as that would be the logical time to do so if it were in November. Otherwise the last chance would be December's routine patch day. I have not seen any references to bringing it to desktop dGPUs. Flipping it around a bit, is there some functionality offered by Copilot+ that is wanted? Are there alternative methods offering similar functionality? Sure, it might be more convenient if the OS bundled software offered it, but it isn't the only way.
Some users managed to unlock Copilot+ capabilities, like using Recall on non-Copilot systems. You can also leverage GPT4ALL for local AI conversations, even though it isn't Copilot. Yes, AMD AI 300 and Intel Core Ultra 200v have achieved or secured Copilot+ certification.
