I returned from work yesterday and tried to start a game via Steam. But nothing would begin after the message "Preparing to Launch <insert game>". Assuming it was an issue with the Steam client, I closed Steam entirely and opened the executable file on my hard drive that contains games (Windows and Steam are installed on my 128GB Kingston HyperX SSD). I encountered several errors, such as needing to rebuild and repair the Steam registry, warnings about being logged in as another user, and some DirectInput problems. I cleared the Steam download cache and checked local files in a few games that still wouldn’t launch. Reinstalling the Steam client didn’t help either. I ran Windows System Check using sfc/scannow in Command Prompt, but no problems were found. I removed potential interfering programs like Kaspersky Internet Security and iOBit Advanced System Care, but nothing resolved it. I used chkdsk on my 3TB Seagate SSD, yet no bad sectors appeared. Restoring my PC to a previous System Restore point (before installing The Witcher 3 via GoG Downloader) didn’t fix the issue, as the install had removed a Visual C++ Runtime 2013 package. I eventually decided to reinstall Windows 10 and Steam, but even after making the SSD the main Steam library, the same problems persisted. Interestingly, moving one or two games to a folder on the SSD worked perfectly through Steam and directly. I’m now copying over 1TB of games to an external HDD to see if they launch from there. If this doesn’t work, do you have any advice? Thanks ahead!
