I’m experiencing issues with my FPS in Minecraft singleplayer and Battlefield 5. Despite setting the render distance to 12 chunks and running at low settings, I can’t exceed 100 or 120 FPS respectively. My hardware includes a GTX 1080, Ryzen 7 2700X, and 16GB RAM at 2666MHz. I’m wondering if there’s something wrong with my setup or if these numbers are typical. What steps can I take to improve performance?

You're probably constrained by CPU and memory limits to reach your goals. First and second generation Ryzen struggled significantly compared to current third generation models, especially in gaming where they lag behind Intel's Coffee Lake setup. As observed here:

The 2700X performs similarly to the 2600 because games rarely utilize more than eight threads, and 2666mhz memory also severely limits performance.

Minecraft relies heavily on CPU power, while Battlefield 5 is among the most demanding in terms of processing. You can lower graphics settings without much impact if your main limitation isn't the GPU, which won’t boost FPS further. Instead of pushing everything to low, aim for a balanced approach so your GTX 1080 isn’t underused.

Check if your FPS isn't limited by v-sync or similar settings. It might seem like a software issue if you're matching the same FPS in 1080p as in 1440p. Also, consider whether RAM speed could be affecting performance.

V-sync is disabled in every game I play, but I'm considering upgrading to faster RAM. I'm thinking about purchasing a new set of RAM sticks temporarily. Thanks for your assistance.

Thanks for the response. I plan to check for faster RAM sticks and consider upgrading my CPU once the Gen4 Ryzen models are released.

Do you know the speed your CPU reaches while playing games? You might also consider adjusting your RAM. A small or even bigger overclock could be achievable.

There seems to be an issue, but I perform better with my i5 7400 and R5 2600x. Have you reinstalled the drivers or verified that everything is current?
