Not achieving 60 FPS in any game, despite no system components being fully utilized?
I believe my PC is quite powerful, but I’m still struggling to reach 60 FPS in any game. My initial thought was about my GPU, but after checking each component’s performance, I couldn’t find any clear reason for the lack of improvement.
Here are my specifications:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core
GPU: RTX 2070
RAM: 16 GB DDR4
Mainboard:
MSI B450 Gaming Pro
Samsung SSD
Windows 10
I connected two 4K monitors and one 1080p monitor to my GPU.
During a session of Nier Replicant, I recorded stats on Imgur. I achieved roughly 40 - 45 FPS. Rainbow Six Siege averages about 50 FPS, though it occasionally drops frames. Valheim lags around 30 FPS and only runs smoothly at 2K resolution, where it’s about 40 FPS.
If anyone knows why I’m not seeing the performance I expect, I’d appreciate any insights. Does a 4K display really affect my gaming experience?
Games will be constrained by either the CPU or the GPU.
Generally, it's the GPU, especially at 4K.
When you lower the resolution or adjust settings, does your FPS increase?
It’s probable that a 3080 would need to run quickly in action games at 4K.
If lowering the settings doesn’t boost your frame rate, then the CPU might be the limiting factor.
Notably, single-thread performance is affected.
Windows distributes the workload of a single thread among all available threads.
Therefore, a game that relies solely on a single thread and is CPU-intensive would appear to use 25% of all threads if running on a quad-core processor.
This can mislead you into believing the issue lies elsewhere.
What is the RAM speed—1 stick or 2?
Which brand and model of the PSU do you have?
Should I upgrade or purchase a new one?
Did you perform a fresh OS installation following the upgrade? And is the RAM performance sluggish for the system?

Therefore, if a game was single-threaded and CPU-bound, it would appear on a quad-core processor using only 25% utilization across all four threads.

Thanks for the update! I plan to adjust some settings and lower the resolution to test if it improves performance. It seems like the issue is likely not due to RAM, though. I remember Valheim runs fine at 2k, so maybe 4k isn't necessary yet. Would it help to confirm that the problem isn't caused by insufficient RAM? Also, I upgraded my OS recently—did you do a fresh install as well?
Alright, so I installed 2 16 GB sticks at 3466 MHz. That didn't solve my issue, but now my PC has become unstable.
I got a irql_not_less_or_equal BSOD once randomly. World of Warships crashed a few times without helpful logs. I tried to run the Windows RAM diagnostics, but couldn't find anything.
Is there something I'm missing? Do I need to change some settings of my CPU or anything? I should mention that I had to manually set my RAM to 3644MHz in the BIOS, since it didn't do that by itself.
