I understand this occurred during the Windows 8 developer and consumer previews. However, since you had a licensed Windows 8 (OEM with laptop) prior to upgrading to 10, my certainty is uncertain.

They informed me that because it was an OEM license key, it was linked to the previous PC and its components.

It functions automatically; when you try to turn it on, it will prompt you about the number of computers it was set up on, and you input "1." It has consistently worked for me.
