On various Windows releases it's either 30 or 90 days, but it keeps urging you to purchase a license while restricting more capabilities

I understand this occurred during the Windows 8 developer and consumer previews. However, since you had a licensed Windows 8 (OEM with laptop) prior to upgrading to 10, my certainty is uncertain.

It functions automatically; when you try to turn it on, it will prompt you about the number of computers it was set up on, and you input "1." It has consistently worked for me.
