Hey everyone. I just set up a PC with this setup: Asus Prime b450-plus, AMD Ryzen 5 3400G, G.SKILL TridentZ 16GB, ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro, 256GB Cooler Master Masterwatt 750W, and Semi-Gold. For a while, I experimented with CPU and iGPU overclocking, pushing the GPU up to 1700MHz. I noticed strange green shapes in games and really high temperatures. After that, I upgraded my cooler to Deepcool Gamma XT GT. I turned off CPU core performance in BIOS to lower voltage, but it didn’t help much. I also adjusted the iGPU frequency without success. Since my PC is close to my bed and I often leave it running overnight, sound quality is important to me. I’m considering swapping out the noisy part. My questions are: 1) Can integrated graphics really cause coil whine? 2) Could it come from under the CPU and socket instead of the VRM or SoC? 3) Might the added weight of my new cooler be affecting the heatsink design? 4) Which component should I replace first?
First, improved cooling is better for handling heat, not increasing overclock stability. Second, lowering core voltage can make the CPU more prone to issues. Lastly, a bent motherboard won't cause coil whine from the coils inside chokes—this is why it's specifically called coil whine.
I avoid pushing the iGPU beyond its limits on this setup... Vega consumes a lot of power even in iGPU mode, and the two-phase VRM for the SOC won't handle the load well. Regarding the noise, does quieting down the overclock reduce it? If so, it's likely related to the SOC VRM chokes, which some might suggest you count phases with.
There’s no solution that works. I attempted to reset CMOS but it didn’t help. It might be related to the CPU. You may need to replace the 3400G or keep it as-is.
I recorded the sound levels using a mobile app, reaching a peak of 45 decibels originating from the heatsink base (socket area).
It doesn't connect to the CPU. I've run Cinebench and Prime95 without any disturbance. The sound is coming from the integrated graphics in the APU, appearing only during games or when scrolling.
