I purchased a computer several years back and am now assembling one. I want to know if the code on the side I haven’t touched before can be used freely without breaking any rules.

It should function most probably. It relies on the operating system.

It appears you're seeking a Windows 7 Home Premium license.

I'm just concerned about upgrading to Windows 10 and don't want my system to lose its validity.

You can verify the product key using the old computer's code. Make sure you use the same Windows version mentioned earlier. Sometimes entering the key manually fails, which can be frustrating but saves money. Once updated, the Windows 10 app should appear in your task bar tray. Save it and you're ready to go.

You can install a product key from the BIOS without an OS by using a USB drive or a preloaded installation media. You’ll need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for inserting the key and booting from the media. If you don’t have an OS yet, you may need to purchase a disk or use a recovery tool.

Add the code during setup or after installation. Windows offers a 30-day free trial if the key fails. It's recommended to place the key later. For official .ISO downloads, insert the key there.
