My Desktop Linux SATA SSD is configured with a 2GB swap partition. I installed it around mid-2013 because I have 16GB of RAM. Lately I've been thinking about whether I should add more space. The heaviest tasks I run on my rig are gaming, sometimes I use GIMP, occasionally Blender, and rarely anything else.

Swapping is necessary when memory runs low. If your system doesn’t hit RAM limits, you won’t need it. A 2GB allocation usually suffices.

linux will indicate the available swap space, it's okay if you don't run out of RAM. if you rely heavily on swap, think about upgrading to a 32-bit version instead of wearing out that cheap SSD.

I no longer use swap partitions. I began setting up temporary partitions in RAM for items I don’t need to retain between reboots. This approach works on systems with both 16 and 32 GB of RAM.

It varies based on your needs. I frequently trigger my swap even with 64GB of RAM. Monitoring your RAM/swap usage will help you determine if it's necessary.

Swapping is also applied during system suspension and hibernation.

Since I have two SSDs, I won't rely on hibernation.

I paid a fair price in 2013 for my 2 1 TB SSDs, so it makes sense you wouldn’t want to do that again.
