Upgrade from Windows 7 or 8 remained functional a month ago, even though it seemed discontinued. A Microsoft representative clarified it was still available.

Windows 7 or 8 devices running during the time of the free Windows 10 update are still acceptable if they were used regularly. For instance, a 2016 laptop with Windows 7/8 that was in use qualifies, whereas a brand new 2016 laptop not started after the update’s cutoff date won’t. However, you can simply boot it from a USB drive, just like with my old machine.
