Consider switching to Windows 10 for better compatibility with your Xbox games and Fortnite. Your Windows 7 key might still work if you activate it through the Xbox app. Regarding the installer, using a Windows 10 USB will likely upgrade your OS rather than just reinstalling it.

You can try various approaches to work with Windows 10, though some might raise doubts about their reliability.

A few months back, Windows 7 keys functioned properly for me. I decided to give it another shot if you boot into Windows 7, insert your Windows 10 USB, and launch setup.exe—it will handle the upgrade and transfer your apps and data (if you choose that option). When installing from the USB directly into the installer, it creates a brand new system. Files on the C partition will be copied to a windows.old folder. Generally, this process succeeds, but I always suggest backing up your system image first. I use Acronis True Image for that, though it’s a paid tool. It offers a 30-day free trial.

Both options are possible, but only a bootable setup is suitable for a new installation. OP, the transition from Win7Ult to Win10 Pro went well. Good luck!

Many users have tried it and found success even after the free upgrade ended long ago. If it fails, you can reach out to Microsoft support for activation.

Thanks! I’ve been thinking about upgrading to Windows 10, but honestly Windows 7 still works well for me. Still, I think it’s time to move forward with Windows 10—especially since I can enjoy all my Fortnite and SoT games on PC now.
