I currently own two Synology NAS units: one with 2X2 GB ECC UDIMM and another with a single 8 GB ECC UDIMM, each on separate channels. I’m assuming all are now operating on the same channel. Should I add another 8 GB ECC UDIMM in dual rank? Would this work seamlessly with the existing units, maintaining the same speed and latency across channels?

ECC RAM focuses on error detection and correction, making it ideal for servers that require flawless performance. The experience I have with servers suggests they dislike mixing RAM types, as mismatches trigger critical errors. While I can't represent a NAS directly, I recommend using compatible RAM to avoid issues. If the system boots with MnM RAM, you're in luck.

I'm unsure if this works consistently across all memory types. From what I understand, mixing RAM ranks isn't recommended. I attempted to combine dual-rank and quad-rank without swapping slots, but it didn't post. It might be possible with your specific hardware, but not guaranteed for others.
