I'm using Windows 11 and usually I have to restart and update to shut down. I tried that and the computer restarted, showing the BIOS update. I was really worried because an error could damage the system. It worked fine, but I imagine if I pressed the button without seeing the update and my battery was low while the charger was away, it could brick the device. This is just a note—anyone else had a similar experience or thoughts? Sorry for the poor grammar; my hands are still shaking from everything.

Laptops can be annoying sometimes. My Dell machine always does a BIOS update when Windows updates, especially when it runs out of power. That probably means the safety feature didn’t activate.

There isn’t a separate choice to skip BIOS updates when using Windows for laptops. The update process is integrated with the operating system.

Since W8 in 2012, desktops have gradually adopted this feature. HP laptops from that era often include a BIOS recovery option, which seems to be available on my older model.

My Lenovo laptop began receiving updates through WU only recently. It's been over three years, and I believe I've noticed them mostly in the past year or two. This causes frustration because I need to change a setting, but the update resets everything. Consequently, I often have to revisit it later to reapply that adjustment so it functions correctly. Something I recently tried on my machine is turning off driver updates, which likely covers the BIOS updates as well. I'll see how that works out. During my initial search, I discovered several registry and group policy entries (no GPE in Home), but then I recalled that DDU offers a toggle for WU driver updates, which might be the straightforward method to reach that setting.

Most of these devices include a BIOS setting to turn off updates. Your homemade setup seems to be correct. I checked various OEM sites and found updates available for Dell (UEFI Firmware Capsule Updates, disable option), HP (Native OS Firmware Update, uncheck), suggesting it’s not universal but worth exploring.

That's a really bad suggestion, sure, Dell.

I didn’t see it on my device. My setup is configured as a metered connection, so updates won’t install unless I give explicit approval.

I've discovered that removing all Dell programs can be an effective solution. This often stops the installation of new BIOS updates.
