You can halt it by changing your internet plan to metered and instructing Windows not to install updates on such a connection.

Windows requests a power connection because running out of battery during an update could damage the system. If you disconnect it while updating, ensure you have sufficient battery remaining. A friend experienced this issue and had to restore her PC by booting from an USB drive before reinstalling Windows. I've also heard about files getting corrupted after abrupt shutdowns during updates.
