Perhaps he tweaks or boosts the system a lot. Bsod that, and a fresh install won't be required.

There are three options to obtain Windows: you can get an activated version with restrictions. [available free with limitations] Download the Previewers edition – it’s almost identical to the complete install, but you only join early updates that might be shaky. [full functionality available under terms] Choose either an OEM or Pro edition. [cost varies] That covers it. I don’t recommend buying free or grey market keys. It seems the price reflects the cost – OEM $99, Pro $199, Enterprise $2k – and you’re taking a chance with grey market keys since they can be fake, stolen, or counterfeit. It’s a gamble.

Only a motherboard replacement needs a new license. This applies when the previous one was OEM and not linked to an MS account. Even those who frequently overclock or modify end up paying for products they use. That reasoning doesn’t make much sense. If you can afford $150 for a high-end OC motherboard, you’re likely ready to spend once on retail Windows 10 and get it for years to come.
