I bought my first AMD Ryzen 7900 XT recently, but it’s not performing as expected. Initially, I installed it in the first slot—no signal, fans running, but no graphics detected and no GPU found. When I moved it to the third slot (the lower one), it worked fine and displayed normally. The issue seems to be with the main slot being Gen 5 at 16x, while the other is Gen 4x4x. I’ve already swapped out the motherboard, so I’m here to find out why this card isn’t compatible or functioning properly in that configuration. It came from an EVGA FTW3 Ultra 3070 Ti.

I think the card might be faulty, especially if the same problem appears on both boards. Unless it's a used one, this shouldn't happen for the GPU to be performing only half its intended speed. Verify your quality settings aren’t set too high, as that could limit the frame rate. If the issue remains after confirming the settings, completely remove and reinstall your GPU drivers using available tools. If the problem continues, consider returning it or filing a warranty claim if possible.

Yes, the 3070TI operates in the top slot and displays the full X16 resolution within that slot.

The specifications indicate a 4x4 configuration tailored for PCI cards. It supports 13th and 12th generation Intel Core processors with LGA1700 socket. Power design uses 13-phase MOS technology. DDR4 memory operates at 5000MHz, with multiple PCIe interfaces including 5.0, 4.0, and 3.0 variants. Storage options include HDMI, DisplayPort, Realtek ALC897, and M.2 drives for WiFi graphics. Additional ports cover HDMI, DisplayPort, SATA3, USB 3.2 Gen2x2, and various M.2 interfaces.

Shows operate perfectly without issues. Dimensions reach 16x fully. Function only activates when placed in the lower compartment, which accommodates 4 units

The GPU doesn't function properly in the top PCIe lane, while it operates in another slot but with reduced speed.

The system is fresh today. The GPU performance is improving but still below expectations. In the GPU version, it displays as Gen 4x 4x. Achieving 3D marks takes about 19 seconds—only slightly better than my 3070Ti, which is quite poor.

It appears the graphics card isn’t functioning properly. It needs to operate at four times its speed in normal conditions, but should increase to eight or sixteen times during heavy use. I’ll be exploring the warranty options.

Thanks for the feedback. I plan to reach out to AMD tomorrow to get their perspective, assuming they don’t offer a solution, I believe they would likely try to resolve it.

It wouldn’t be unexpected if they inquire a few details about your setup. Mentioning the power supply model and the number of PCIe cables connecting it to the graphics card would be helpful. Because the card may require more than 300 watts, it’s best to use two separate 8-pin cables rather than one that connects directly from the power supply to the card. If you’re using a pigtailed cable, I’d suggest trying it with two cables since they might recommend that anyway.
