You're asking about a 8600K chip with 4.7/0 AVX and 4.7 cache, recently upgraded to an i9-9900KS for $360. It seems questionable whether this was a smart move, especially since your GPU is still a 1080. You're considering moving to a 3080 or 3080Ti when prices drop.

From what I observe, the cost seems fair. However, whether it's a worthwhile buy depends on whether you truly needed the added performance. Is the improvement in your productivity or quality of life worth it? And I'm not referring to the excitement of acquiring something new. That excitement fades quickly. I assure you, unnecessary spending is a poor choice.

From a performance standpoint, at $360 you could have obtained a more efficient CPU.

By that metric, I think you are good. You will have to get new motherboard for anything potensially better

Yes, the Ryzen 5 5600X costs around $300 and performs significantly better than the 9900K in gaming. For about $360, you'd get a model with 10.7 to 11.7 GHz, which would have been a slightly improved option.

It means swapping the motherboard would be necessary, but considering the price, this offers a solid value. A 9900k provides a significant boost compared to the 8600k. While single-core speed might be similar, the 9900k boasts eight cores and sixteen threads. Many games are now struggling to run smoothly on just six cores like your 8600k. In the end, you’ll likely enjoy more consistent performance in modern titles, and this CPU should remain functional for a long time.
