Hi, I am looking to build a new computer and people have been telling me to wait for B550 motherboards (I plan on using either 3900x or the new refresh rumoured to be releasing soon). Is there any point in this over B450 (MSI tomahawk)? By the time I will likely want to upgrade again (about 3 years) won't AMD be on AM5 and there will be DDR5 ram, and so a new motherboard will be necessary anyway? Especially with b450 now supporting zen 3, it seems like B550 would be not worth the extra money for me? Thanks
But who mentioned 'extra money'? The new boards will swap in for the old ones...they’ll appear a bit improved, with upgraded specs and features similar to what’s standard at the same cost. If you’re not thinking about purchasing a CPU right now...don’t buy a motherboard just yet...wait.
The "B" chipsets correspond to the "Budget" lineup. In AMD terms, they lack some advanced features such as SLI/Crossfire support, fewer PCIe lanes, and reduced SATA/USB ports compared to higher-end models. This differs from Intel's H or B series, which retain more premium options like USB 3.1 and PCIe 3.0 lanes. The AMD X series mirrors the performance focus of an Intel Z enthusiast board. https://wccftech.com/intel-amd-chipset-r...us-reveal/ https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/3582-...x470-zen-3 For NVMe drives and graphics cards, only PCIe 4.0 devices are permitted.
