I'm working with an older Asus BRD drive in my new system (BW-16D1HT from 2013 or 2014). Because I don't have a full BRD suite, I gathered the necessary DLL/DB files online to let VLC play Blu-ray discs. I also installed Java to activate the disk menu, and everything is now functioning properly except for some BRDs I tried randomly. A few discs still fail to play or aren't recognized by Windows 11, regardless of their age or release date. Recent releases like Blade Runner 2049, Doctor Strange, and The Witch work as expected. "Spaceballs" was identified by Windows, but VLC reported a library error for BD+ discs, suggesting the DLL/DB files didn't include that format. The biggest issue was "Dune," which I recently bought and didn't recognize at all—like inserting an unknown disc into a DVD player. My BRD worked fine in a basic 5- or 6-year-old, bare system, but now it acts as if the drive is faulty or unidentified. Any advice or help would be appreciated!

You need a premium edition of software such as CyberLink since the available versions don't include every encryption method for Blu-ray releases.

I think it makes sense that using another BRD player would help with the Spaceballs issue. The problem seems to be when Windows identifies the disk but VLC can't play it, resulting in the "missing BD+ library" error. The Dune BRD doesn’t even show up in Windows, so a paid DVD suite might not solve it. It feels like the drive or its firmware isn’t recognizing this particular format or type of disk properly. I tried several different BRDs recently, including newer ones like "Doctor Sleep," and they all worked fine. Odd. S.

Unusually, someone with the same concern here: https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopi...=3&t=26033 found a 1984 and a 2021 version of Dune. Still pretty cool, though.

LOL... thought that detail wasn't crucial, but it's the 2021 release by Denis Villeneuve.

I’m revising this for an update. After examining sections of my BRD collection, the VLC fix I discovered applies to roughly 80 to 90% of the drives I’ve tested. A few exceptions exist, but the issues vary in nature. "Dune" remains unresponsive, not appearing in Windows 11 or failing to play in VLC—though it works smoothly on my budget Phillips BRD player. Some discs open instantly on Windows but crash when trying to play them in VLC. Most other drives seem to work without problems, though a few, like "Thor Ragnarök," "Spaceballs," and "Apollo 13," either open normally or trigger crashes instead. "Blood Diamond" doesn’t navigate to the main menu but shows a different sub-menu. Overall, the problem seems tied to unsupported BRD formats on certain drives or within VLC itself.
