You'll need a specialized mounting bracket for the i7 12700 and MSI Pro Z690-P. The Newegg listing mentions this requirement, so it applies to both stock and aftermarket coolers.

The LGA1700 cooler mounts are distinct from earlier Intel models. It seems you need to verify that your cooler is compatible with the correct bracket. The standard cooler included with the processor may not fit properly.

12700 doesn't seem to have a stock cooler, despite thinking it would be suitable since it's cooler than the 12700k.

Only the "K" parts receive the cooler stock. "F" parts don't get the integrated GPU. Non-K and non-F parts get it all.

Technically, the mounting locations are identical, though a different Z-height is required.

It measures 78 mm by 78 mm instead of the previous 75 mm by 75 mm, which was in use from 1156 to 1200. (You're correct that the Z-height is now lower too.) This difference is small enough that you might be able to adjust the holes on some older brackets.

The cooler seems to be okay. If not, the tray version would likely be significantly more affordable.

It looks improved, but does it also perform better? The earlier version worked but was quite noisy.

He says it works a bit better than the larger model. The design seems to have been considered for looks, and the copper slug is handling things well. There are no sound ratings mentioned, but it doesn’t seem like much power is being delivered without heat pipes. It feels more like a solid, acceptable choice rather than a mediocre one.
