I have a setup ready for a 1080 upgrade, but I'm concerned the CPU might slow down the GPU performance.

I've noticed people running older games with this CPU boosted and a 1060 with 6GB RAM, but any current title needing decent processing will likely struggle. Whether this GPU fits the setup depends on overall system quality and cost, like a 1050ti often being too expensive for its capabilities.

FX-8350 after being modified can manage tasks similar to a GTX 970 in triple-A titles (about 3GB 1060 performance), meaning a 1050Ti should work fine in most cases.

I'm concerned about the airflow too since I only have a 140mm intake. Even at full throttle on the GT640, it's coming in around 75-80°C on the card.

They mentioned the thermal concerns with the GT640, but it might struggle with a weak cooler. The 1050Ti seems more reliable, though it’s not overly demanding on power. For a better balance, consider choosing a model with a solid cooler to maintain performance even under less-than-ideal conditions. Remember, an RX 570 offers similar pricing to the 1050Ti and delivers much better results.

Your mobile device only supports cross-fire functionality. Would you consider upgrading to a Radeon-based system?

Refers to two Radeon GPUs or a single Nvidia 1050/1050 Ti GPU.

Dual-GPU offers little value in 2020 for most users due to several factors. Opt for a single, quicker card—it will perform better. My argument was that (during its production era), the 1050Ti was priced similarly to an RX 570, yet it ran about 25-30% slower, making it a less appealing choice. If this applies to your situation, I’d suggest going with the RX 570 instead.
