Sorry for the confusing question, but upgrading your GPU seems tricky. The new model needs an extra slot on the motherboard compared to the old one, which is causing some confusion. Your specs look like this: GPU, Ryzen 5 2600, 16GB RAM, B450 Tomahawk, Corsair power supply with two 1.5TB SSDs. I’m wondering if you have enough expansion ports for this upgrade. Are you referring to the size of the GPU (how much space it occupies or the gap from the back panel to the top of the cooler)? Which GPU are you currently using? Do you have any additional PCIe cards installed in your system? All GPUs share the same PCIe x16 port on the motherboard (some use x8 but still fit the same slot) and don't need extra components. If the card fits inside the case, it should work. It may prevent other PCIe slots from being used, but it won't connect to them or utilize them.
Hi, thanks for reaching out. I wasn’t too concerned about the physical space since I was surprised by the article mentioning three extension slots instead of the two my current GPU has. My Sapphire Radeon RX 580 should work fine without any problems.
They mentioned the GPU requires three "bays," whereas the previous model needed only two. Each bay once fit a PCI or PCIe connector, but modern motherboards usually accommodate the larger size of current GPUs without needing a dedicated slot. These bays refer to the metal supports at the back of the case where the GPU connects to the mainboard.
When the cooler on the card is sufficiently thick or tall, you can't insert another card into the adjacent slot since the video card cooler will obstruct it. The new graphics card might feature a much taller cooling system, making it unsuitable to place cards in the two slots next to the video card—hence the need for three extension slots. Only one slot is available, while the other two are blocked by the video card's cooler.
Using an extremely old and low-quality PSU for a modern 7700 XT is not recommended.
