You can connect the WAN cable directly to a switch and link multiple access points to it, achieving coverage throughout your home. Using a UDMP instead would change how the connection is managed but still allows you to extend WiFi coverage.

It depends on whether it's just a modem or a combined device. A standalone modem lacks IP assignment capabilities, so you need a router with DHCP. If it's a combo unit, it already includes the required components and doesn't require an additional router. According to what I know, it behaves like a router without the switching functions, which are handled by an external switch over Ethernet.
