I just finished assembling a system with an i9-12900k chip. It took longer than usual because I had to delay the whole project for over a year due to a family situation. When I got that processor, 13th generation chips were brand new and the 14th or Ultra series weren’t available yet. Even though it works fine with any standard components, I’m not sure it will support everything I need in the long run. Since both 13th and 14th gen processors are problematic, I wasn’t ready to upgrade to a newer generation. Bartlett processors have come up as a possible alternative, which might be useful later. At CES I saw some updates about them, but I haven’t found much beyond that they’re now called Core 200S. That’s good news—it shows they’re still working on the idea. Still, I don’t have clear details about the release date or exact specifications yet.

Nope unless you switch completely to playing Civilization and Cities Skylines until the endgame. Maintain the same opinion, upgrade when you realize your computer isn’t handling the tasks as expected. Five years remains a solid benchmark.

You could be surprised by the level of CPU demands some specialized GIS tools require, yet I’m cautiously optimistic they’ll work. I’m still hoping Bartlett remains adequate if upgrades become necessary, so I’m monitoring updates closely.
