I see what you mean. I've cleaned the RAM more than twice and the slots too. It's hard to figure out why the 2x16 at 2133 settings aren't booting correctly—I've tried every possible slot arrangement. However, the 2×8 plus 2×16 (48GB total) are working fine at 3200 without issues. I'm now running two 2x16 sticks, which are double-sided RAM, and I've also added two additional 8GB sticks. Both kits are rated at 3600MHz: the 32GB kit has 16 slots and the 16GB kit has 18 slots. Also, my quad channel voltage is 1.31V, which is just a bit below their rated range.
i own an asus x570 tuff gaming rig similar to what you and your two kids use. everyone gets the same mmo and ram, but my kids love it, while my sons are more picky. they handle 2x8 3600 xmp fine, but struggle with 2x16 3600 xmp—can’t get through 4x8 3600 xmp. they do manage 2x8 3200 and 2x8 3600 at 3600. i think it’s just a matter of which chipset you get.
You're seeing issues with 1 and 3 channels while using 2 and 4, but it works with 2x16 and 2x8 in quad mode. The problem might be specific to those channel combinations.
You're asking if the two options are meant to be used together or separately. The sizes mentioned—2x8 3200 and 2x8 3600xmp—seem to refer to different configurations, possibly for storage or performance, but they don't align in a straightforward way. It’s confusing why one size doesn’t fit the other without more context.
It seems your issue is similar to what I experience when the boot time isn't 4,3600 seconds. What happens next depends on the exact cause—maybe the system fails to start properly, leading to a black screen or incomplete detection of hardware.
it will perform 4 3600 at 2133 occasionally, though the performance changes based on the speed selected. it surprised me when switching from 3200 to 3600 helped. now it runs smoothly after a year of troubles—previously I spent a week trying to fix it. everything stabilized once everyone was upgraded to 32Gb.
