I recall the initial launch featured a reasonable player base; it wasn't the top seller like Black Ops 1, but it had decent numbers. A few years on, I'm wondering if purchasing it for my PC is wise. The fact that someone in school has a key for just five dollars raises some concerns.

I think it's unlikely anyone is doing that anymore.

It seems like you're looking for information on whether anyone is still playing a game. A helpful resource is the Reddit community for Titanfall: https://www.reddit.com/r/titanfall

I enjoy playing it often. It's an enjoyable game with plenty of movement for each character. I've never seen anyone use the sniper, carbine, smart pistol, or SMG effectively. If you're someone who likes to speed up the BO2 character by pressing the "W" key repeatedly because you think they're moving too slowly, this might be the right game for you. I purchased it for $20 from a nearby store, brand new. Give it a try. What would you spend those $5 on? Buying three cheese pizzas and a cupcake?
