I'd prefer Mint paired with MATE. Most folks I know who aren't familiar with tech can't see the difference in performance between it and Windows.
I use it to retrieve information from people's computers. For someone not familiar with technology, I'd support Jamiec1130 and choose Linux Mint. It's the most user-friendly option available, offering essential tools such as LibreOffice (word processing), slideshows, spreadsheets, and more. XFburn for burning CDs is also included. On a 12-year-old Dell laptop, it's performing excellently. If you prefer a simpler, Apple-inspired interface, Elementary OS is a great alternative.
