It's been more than ten years since I assembled a gaming PC, but I'm back in the loop. I have a solid, water-cooled setup and am considering boosting my CPU speeds—specifically the Intel i7-9700K at around 3.6 GHz. Any experience with overclocking this model? What methods did you use, and what were the outcomes? I've heard some folks managed to push it up to 5 GHz. Thanks for any advice! I had a 9700K and a 9900K and tried overclocking them both. Change settings in the BIOS and go from there. What I found was that reaching 4.9 GHz on all cores was relatively easy with around 1.3 V but getting to 5 GHz was only possible with 1.35 V (this will depend on your CPU though and the ‘silicon lottery’). This resulted in higher power draw (and more heat) and not much more extra performance. After all it is only a 100 MHz difference. In the end I ran my 9900K using MCE (multi core enhancement) with all cores at 4.7 GHz. This was a balance between clock speed and voltage / heat. I certainly recommend that you try overclocking your 9700K but be prepared for the extra power draw and heat that comes from that. And don’t expect to see that much of a performance increase outside of benchmarks. Once you have what you think is a stable OC run Prime 95 and see what happens. Be warned though this is a real torture test for your CPU.
I realize this message came late, but I recently purchased a new cooler and wanted to explore what I could achieve with my CPU. I checked this article and haven’t overclocked since my 4770k, so that was a while ago. I’ve been using MSI Game Boost, which provides these stats: I tried boosting to 4.9GHz in the BIOS, but it didn’t start properly—probably something went wrong. Could it be possible to reach around 4.9GHz with lower voltage? Or should I stick with the 86MHz after stressing Prime for about 20 minutes? I don’t need 4.9GHz and am comfortable with this setup. I’m just curious about the potential gains without much effort. Also, the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360mm might help you understand my cooling performance better.
