You're unsure about which desktop WiFi chipsets allow connection sharing, but you're thinking about broadcasting a WiFi network so others can join if your PC is connected via Ethernet. You'll need to verify this by testing it yourself.

What are you loading? Your gadgets? How many do you own? Have you used it before? What issue are you facing now? Choose any modem, but ensure your router can match the connection speed and support future improvements. If you prefer a tailored solution, most people build their own using pfSense. My method is to select a ready-made device that you can upgrade later. pfSense struggles with WiFi performance, so avoid trying to run a wireless antenna on it. Instead, use dedicated APs and manage them separately.

I mostly use gear shipped from Japan, so the ISP combo unit isn’t handling big data transfers well. It also only offers two Ethernet connections, which are currently used by my NAS and my laptop—my gaming rig once.

Due to limited ports, they might have skipped adding a switch chip altogether. I doubt they do it anymore, though it’s conceivable if they’re strictly cutting costs. A Gigabit switch is affordable but still wastes an extra outlet. For WiFi from a PC, my suggestion is to skip it—even if it functions, it underperforms compared to a dedicated router or access point. Sharing data over Windows makes it even less reliable, suitable only in emergencies rather than regular use.
