No, Nvidia cards are not considered end-of-life on macOS.
I recently purchased an iMac from late 2012 featuring an Nvidia GT 640M chip. Although the hardware is outdated, I've tested it on other platforms and found it capable of running Fortnite at low/720P settings. On macOS, using Mojave it becomes quite problematic—FPS fluctuates wildly, jumping from 1 to 60 without warning. While other titles like Borderlands 2 and Sims 4 still run, overall performance is disappointing compared to what the card could achieve. There seems to be limited official support for Nvidia drivers on Mojave as well. I managed to install an older driver version temporarily, which helped a bit but wasn’t a permanent fix. Now that I’m not using a Mac much and haven’t played in a while, I wondered if this is the current state or if there are rare exceptions. Are Nvidia drivers still compatible with macOS 10.12?
The initial versions weren't optimal, according to @DrMacintosh. If that's true, I'd recommend checking the drivers from the NVIDIA site https://github.com/Benjamin-Dobell/nvidia-update. This should also work on Macs. Additionally, it seems the official Mac release might not have been well refined.
Drivers aren't the issue with that card; the concern lies in the fact that the card is outdated and gaming on macOS depends on OpenGL or Metal. For Fortnite, it's OpenGL. If you're aiming for top performance, consider installing Windows via Bootcamp and playing that way.
I was intrigued by the section of the topic line I could read. It caught me off guard with the anime avatar crowd that feels real, and I’m wondering why we don’t pool our resources for a 1050Ti!
