I’ll upgrade my CPU, motherboard, and RAM while keeping everything else unchanged. Do I need to reinstall Windows?

It's generally advised to perform a fresh installation, though certain circumstances apply. Switching from Intel to Intel works well, but moving from Intel to AMD is not advisable. Similarly, changing from AMD to AMD can cause issues, especially when upgrading to high-end models like the 7900X3D or 7950X3D, since core management fails without a clean setup. A fresh install should be preferred for the 7800X3D as it's a single chiplet and doesn't require special handling, or any 7000 series that isn't 3D. Windows may need re-activation in these cases.

Ensure your system runs Windows 10 or 11. The setup should update itself automatically. Just connect the old drive and tweak settings such as UEFI, Safe Boot, and TPM. A fresh OS and app installation will take a long time—do this step first before reinstalling.

I thought Windows activation could be simpler if done on the current setup first, then reinstall when needed. It seems the system already understands your license and can manage it well, whereas a fresh install would lack that knowledge. I hope Microsoft provides a clear list of licenses so you can choose one during a clean install.

I've tried it multiple times and it's surprisingly unpredictable. In the last couple of attempts, they kept sending files to my PC and modifying the keys instead of giving me a direct copy. It was quite stressful.

I recently switched from a ThinkPad P50 to a ThinkPad P52 (moving from Intel 6th gen to 8th gen) and first just transferred my SSDs. Windows functioned, but I decided to perform a clean install for extra security.
