Hey everyone, I’ve found a 9900k for 325€ in Germany, so I’m not sure if upgrading from an 8700k makes much sense. I was curious about whether newer chips would be better OC options this year. Apparently, later ZEN 2 chips can run faster than earlier ones, which is why I’m asking if that trend continues with the newer 9xxx CPUs. I’m hoping it does, since I want at least 5GHz without my AIO overheating. Thanks for your quick replies!

Most improbable yet likely, given the reduced need for the premium 9th generation chip, Intel might have released a subpar 9900K version for a lower-tier model. This ensures you receive the top quality from the batch. Over time, they improved their production methods, increasing the success rate of high-quality chips in subsequent releases. I recommend purchasing used to secure the best value.

No, there's no newer stepping and they can all pretty much hit 5GHz without issue. As for Zen 2, no that's also untrue. The higher numbered chips in the stack are better binned and from there on it's simply silicon lottery on whether or not you can overclock better. Lotta factors with that one.

Isn't Intel already optimized the 14Nm node 3 or 5 years prior? They've relied on the same design, making it hard to believe they maintain better performance with the latest 9900K chips versus the original ones.

You're right, it's unusual to hear about newer chips being better. It seems like most updates focus on performance rather than just reliability.
