I'm planning to improve my PC (currently an AMD A10-7700k with GTX 1050 Ti and 8GB RAM) but I'm trying to do it affordably. The Xeon E3-1220v3 is inexpensive and seems capable of running Half Life Alyx, though I want more reliable advice. Could you suggest alternatives? If not, are there other budget-friendly CPU options available?

The game will start, yes, but the CPU runs at 4c/4t with a boost of 3.5GHz. You won’t get a top-tier VR feel. If you’re purchasing a system meant for a premium VR headset, make sure the cost is justified. What are your upgrade funds? Also, this setup will limit VR performance as well.

I allocated $150 to $180 for the components. The deal includes an RX 580 8GB for $90, an E3-1220V3 for $40, and I plan to recycle my RAM while getting another stick. I also think I found a motherboard for $45.

What expansion would you consider? You're close to a solid upgrade path. PCPartPicker offers a comprehensive parts list. A Ryzen 5 1600 processor fits well, priced around $85 on Amazon. The ASRock B450M PRO4 motherboard is available for $79.97. Memory options include the Patriot Viper 4 Blackout with 8GB DDR4-3000 at $39.99. The XFX Radeon RX 580 8GB GTS costs $90. Overall, the total comes to approximately $294.96, including shipping and taxes. This recommendation isn't ideal for the specific Xeon model mentioned, as it doesn't match the socket requirements and the platform isn't optimal.
