Hello everyone! I’m curious about using external optical drives for gaming. While digital formats are usually better, I’ve noticed older and even newer games can be more affordable with them. I’m interested in the ASUS SDRW-08D2S-U LITE external optical drive. Thanks in advance!

Installing a game from the disc places its files on the hard disk inside your PC. Games needing the disc are usually present for DRM reasons—files aren’t read from the disc while playing. Using an external optical drive shouldn’t affect performance.

I think HardwareCanucks released a video on this topic. He didn’t have any problems except regarding CSGO.

I don't recall any current titles needing DVD storage. Most modern systems handle virtual drives well. Classic games still rely on physical media, and USB offers better performance than IDE or SATA1 setups.
