I'm working on upgrading my PC. After installing a new motherboard, I encountered a corrupted boot partition on my Windows drive. Even after using the repair tools, nothing worked. I tried installing Windows 10 on a new M.2 drive, but the latest version I have is 8.1. When I start it, it says it can't connect to Ethernet because a network adapter is missing. The problem is that all the motherboard drivers are for Windows 10/11. To move up to Windows 10, I need to activate the product online. Shouldn't I use the drivers from my old C drive instead? Well, the SATA drivers aren't updated either, so my old drives only appear in the BIOS. Right now I'm stuck. Any advice on fixing this?
The message warns that the provided product key isn't valid for your Windows 8.1 full version. It suggests checking the key or using another one.
Was this after the installation or while it was happening? Also, since you have a key, you can reach out to Microsoft—they’re typically very helpful with activation problems and even provided a new key before, which was easier since my version was already digitally activated but the hardware changed often.
Thanks for your guidance! After searching through my belongings, I discovered a vintage wireless adapter in a camera bag. Now I can reconnect online and switch to Windows 10, which worked for activating 8.1. Fingers crossed nothing else fails!
