I recently swapped out the cooler on my PC (HP EliteDesk 800 G4 TWR WS) but it stopped working. The case fan speeds up to high for about half a minute, then drops, followed by the PSU fan running at full speed continuously, without any warning beeps or codes. I've tried repositioning the CPU, cooler, and RAM, unplugging and replugging power cables, reinstalling the old cooler, and clearing CMOS—both with and without a graphics card. Experimenting with different components didn't resolve the issue. The internal buzzer starts when the 4-pin CPU power cable isn't connected, indicating error codes are still possible. I noticed the behavior stays the same even when RAM is removed completely, so I suspected that might be the problem. Despite cleaning contacts and using a working memory stick borrowed by a friend, nothing changed. My guess is either the motherboard or PSU is faulty, but since both are proprietary HP parts, I’m unsure how to test them. Would anyone here have experience with this situation and what they think is wrong?
Specs: HP EliteDesk 800 G4 TWR WS (proprietary case, motherboard, and PSU) with i7-8700, 2x8gb DDR4-2666, Thermaltake Gravity i2 cooler, and 500gb NVMe SSD.
the chief position is the most annoying word ever... what went wrong with the old cooler? why did you swap it? they often install propretary connections on coolers too much. that means you can't always rely on shelf coolers; you need a new one from HP. sometimes you just have to destroy the mainboard because of mismatched pins. the i7 8700 runs cooler than the i7 8700k, but it's still a good option if overheating is the problem. with the 8700k it could drop temperature by as much as 20°C thanks to poor components inside. it’s easy to take off when you need to replace it.
