i was exploring vintage xeons and wondering if there was a top-tier cpu for the lga2011-3. i noticed some models claiming to be the best, like the intel xeon e5-2680 v3. when i dug deeper, i found others with more cores and better scores, even though they were still lga2011-3 chips. after searching further, i discovered that the e5 2699a was often cited as the strongest due to its chipset, while newer models like the e7-8890 v4 were more powerful. i saw that older generations had limitations, and newer ones didn’t match the performance of their predecessors. i also considered starting with a budget xeon on an older chipset, upgrading later as prices dropped. this is still evolving, so i’m keeping an open mind. update: i understand the incompatibility between 2011 and 2011-3, but why does the e7-8890 v4 fit an older socket while newer xeons need newer ones? this is confusing, but i’m trying to figure it out. thanks for the update!

Before starting anything, what will you be doing on this machine? If it's all about gaming these xeons, they might not perform well and most discussions beyond the 12-14 thread range won't be useful. Even for rendering tasks, these xeons are outperformed by consumer CPUs that cost similar amounts or cheaper models like the E7 8890. Now regarding your query: LGA 2011 is only version 3 and 4, while LGA 2011-3 uses a completely different socket. CPUs aren't compatible with that socket, and the E7 8890 requires a very specific chipset. It isn't compatible with x99 at all—it's not even v4 in practice, just an outdated architecture. You could say it's its own iteration of LGA 2011.

E7-8890 v4 fits only with LGA2011-1 sockets, not X79 or X99. It was designed for premium servers with up to eight connectors
