Yo, this is probably a dumb question but I don't understand understand board lays outs well enough to answer it for myself and google has failed me. I know the chips and the ram are not going to be backwards compatible with the new AM5 stuff coming out from AMD, but will the m.2 slots? I want to upgrade the storage on my current build but I need to know if I'll be able to move the drive to one of the new boards when the time comes before I decide if it's worth it.

M.2 is the standard connection. They will function as intended, simply operating according to what the drive specifies. You likely won’t need a PCIe Gen 5 SSD either, since we haven’t even reached Gen 4 fully, let alone Gen 3. What are you considering purchasing instead of the more costly option? Gen 4 prices are finally dropping.

alongside the comments made by @Shimejii, Zen 4 will maintain extra 4 PCIe connections from the processor to an M.2 storage device, along with the existing 16x dedicated to the graphics card.

You're interested in purchasing a Gen 4 model and checking its long-term viability.
