I’m considering an upgrade now. I’m using an i5 2400 with an OEM 1155 board. My CPU isn’t fast enough for the tasks I need, and I’ve faced issues where the fan stops working and the temperature spikes to 100°C during heavy use. The BIOS doesn’t let me adjust the fan settings because the motherboard’s BIOS is quite basic. I’m weighing two options: either upgrade to an FX processor with an AM3+ board or switch to a used first-generation Ryzen on an AM4 platform. I want to stay under £100 and avoid extra costs for new parts. My current cooler is the stock one for the FX-8350 chip, and I don’t want to replace it or buy something new.
The installation slots vary. The only AM4 board I'm aware of that fits these is the Asus Crosshair VI Hero.
Stock brackets are fine. I'm employing an AM3 FX heatpipe heatsink with a fanless design on my 220ge. (quiet operation) It looks quite similar to the Wraith Prism cooler I have before.
