Hello, I was checking out an upgrade for my GPU when the latest NVIDIA models came out. I wanted to switch from a 1080 to a 3080 but wasn’t sure if my CPU was holding things back. My current CPU is an i5-8600K. Should I consider upgrading it to avoid a bottleneck?

The RAM has one negative, which might mean your CPU wouldn't work well with the 3080.

Well coffee lake gains from quicker RAM, so an upgrade would be beneficial. For the CPU, gaming performance is still solid with an 8600k, but evaluate its amperage and stability when paired with the 3080. It shouldn't be too much of a problem, but if you're considering an upgrade, a used 8700k could be a great choice. Just wait for amperage to stabilize and assess its impact before deciding.

We don't know yet if you will experience bottleneck, either wait for review or take a chance. The worst that will happen is still a major performance gain. And not to throw Shade but Speccy is broken AF.... maybe use something else in the future.

Games now focus more on multicore optimization and will keep improving. However, for the same cost, upgrading to an RTX 3080 gives better FPS than moving from an i9-10900K with a new motherboard. But an i5-8600K 6c/6t won’t perform well with an RTX 3080—it already struggles with an RTX 2080 Ti. If you can only afford the RTX 3080, go for it; check reviews when it launches or preorder soon if possible. And if you also want a CPU upgrade, wait for Intel 11th gen or Ryzen 4000.
