I'm planning to set up a budget for a new PC soon. I expect to upgrade the CPU motherboard and RAM when the next generation arrives. It makes sense to future-proof, especially since my current system is nearly five years old. With 32GB of RAM, some people argue it's still sufficient, but others wonder if 16GB would have been better in the past. Has 32GB of RAM been useful recently, or is 16GB enough for most users today?

16GB remains sufficient for many gamers. Adding streaming services and extra programs likely requires around 32GB.

Specific demands often appear when using larger capacities—around 16 to 32GB works best. 8GB seems insufficient for modern applications, though it might suffice for basic tasks. 16GB can feel limited sometimes, but should handle regular use without trouble. If performance matters more than storage size, consider adjustments. Edited May 6, 2022 by Quackers101

16GB works well for most people (gaming, streaming, and many background tasks). I upgraded to 32GB mainly because I’m running a lot of unusual software in virtual machines—this provides extra space for heavier programs, even though it only accounts for about 2% of my desktop workload. I don’t feel guilty about having 32GB. For around 99% of users, 64GB isn’t really necessary.

16GB running at 4000MHz is quite impressive. However, some 32GB models can match that speed, but it doesn't justify the cost.

16GB suffices for most users, 32GB offers better security unless you work with video editing, streaming, or 3D modeling.

During gameplay I occasionally require more than 16GB of RAM (my total is 48GB). There’s also a significant amount of applications running in the background.

For most users, 16GB suffices, but I suggest 32GB for those who multitask or handle heavy workloads. Unless your needs require more, 64GB may be unnecessary today.

Used heavily more than 32GB twice: executing y-cruncher 10b on hwbot, and loading a large number of custom assets in Cities: Skylines. 16GB remains sufficient.
