Newbie trying to make the Intel 9700K run faster than stock settings
Hey everyone, I'm brand new at overclocking and have a few questions right now. Currently, I've set all cores to 4.8 GHz with an adaptive voltage of 1.25v, using core voltage mode. On my CPU-Z, the cache ratio is set to 45x. When I look at the voltages, they jump up to around 1.38v (usually staying between 1.2 and 1.33v). This feels a bit too high for such a small overclock. I did run my OCs with Intel XTU using two stress tests: one lasting an hour and another running for fifteen minutes to get a sense of things. Please let me know if I'm doing something wrong or missing something important. Thanks!
Adaptive can always be a bit finicky and there usually is a little surge at the beginning. When you run something like Cinebench R20 and use Hardwarenfo to monitor vcore, under load it should be okay and stabilise at the right vcore. I used to use adaptive but now have gone to fixed as at least here the vcore is properly under control. The CPU still ramps down so overall it never is an issue.
Adaptive can sometimes be a bit tricky, especially when you first start using something like Cinebench R20 and check Hardwarenfo while it's working hard on your vcore. If the settings are right, things should settle down quickly under load and stay steady at the correct voltage level. I used to rely on adaptive features back then, but now I prefer fixed voltages because here the voltage stays perfectly controlled all the time. The CPU does still reduce its speed when needed, so this approach never causes any problems in practice.
Thanks so much for your reply, vMax! I've decided to use manual voltage settings instead of the automatic ones. I started with 1.3v at 5ghz. I think it was just wishful thinking that this would work, and honestly, nothing happened. Now I'm going to try increasing it to 1.35.
There are no issues here! A little effort can help you reach 5.1GHz while keeping the voltage around 1.35v. I hope it works out as planned.
