When enhancing parts in the computer, what happens to the previous ones?
I mean motherboards, processors, graphics cards, memory, etc...

I usually pack them in their original boxes and keep them for future reference, if they hold any sentimental or milestone value. If not and finances come into play, I often sell them on an online marketplace or with assistance from a friend who is employed at a computer shop.
It's wise to retain parts for troubleshooting purposes. It can also be beneficial to keep some components if you wish to start a PC repair venture.

It depends on which parts and their age. If feasible and not too old, I try to assemble a computer and donate it to someone close. My turnaround is about 2-3 years.

Sell
Repurpose into something else
Assemble a new system and gift it to someone
Eventually, however...electronics recycling.
I have a stack of old laptops in the garage, awaiting disposal.

The components are still functional, but I don't think I can sell it. I could donate the entire computer to someone and buy myself a new tower, but I actually like my tower and would prefer just to replace the outdated components. In my situation, the motherboard, processor, and perhaps RAM need updating. I want to prepare for Windows Pro 11, as I've been informed that support will conclude soon.

Now, two years later?
You're constructing an entirely new computer, except for the case.

🤣
... plus two years later. I got distracted and never completed my upgrade. Now it's time to genuinely consider it again. My tower is a midi tower, I believe, the motherboard is a Z97-P, so I think that requires replacement alongside the processor and RAM.
It's quite challenging to make the correct choice - new computer or merely replacing the obsolete parts...

I mean, it's even simpler now since the computer is now 10 years old instead of eight. A 10-year-old GPU is likely insufficient and almost every power supply is EOL after a decade. And, naturally, you've just informed us about the motherboard's chipset. At the pace we're being updated about the parts, we may provide you with specific recommendations sometime around the year 2040.

Replacing the outdated components IS a new computer (excluding the case)
There is essentially nothing compatible with a Z97 board that is also compatible with anything deserving of the term "upgrade".
Processor/RAM/motherboard.
Likely GPU.
Power supply if it is of the same age as the Z97 motherboard.
How are you set for storage devices? Perhaps an upgrade there as well.

okay I acknowledge that point.

: Let me enumerate what I possess. I could send you a screenshot of my system information, but some items are in German and I am uncertain if you understand that language.
- Z97-P motherboard
- Intel Core i5-4690K CPU 3.50 GHz
- 16 GB RAM
- 250 SSD for operating system
- 2 TB SATA HDD for files
- HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH16NS40
- Integrated sound
- NVIDIA Quadro NVS 295 with additional DP card to connect 2 monitors
- Integrated network with additional WiFi card
I also still have a Floppy drive, but it's nonfunctional even though it's properly connected and should be operational. I was considering if there is a way to retain it, but I can already hear you chuckling.
I would like Bluetooth/USB-C on my new one.
Can you do something with that? I was contemplating a budget of around £1500.
