Lower operating temperatures are beneficial, yet maintaining high-end chips below 90°C in multicore tasks is extremely challenging due to dense transistor packing, making heat dissipation difficult. If we consider older Sandy Bridge designs, 90°C would be a significant issue, but newer models are engineered to manage such heat effectively. Therefore, with a 5800X3D, temperatures around 60-70°C are typical, especially in games where CPU load is reduced.

Switch off the fans in balanced mode, adjust to static at 1600rpm, then re-test. 90°C works too; maintaining temperatures below 80°C is recommended for models 9900K and newer.

Hey, thanks for the update. I usually stick to reliable components until they show signs of wear. With a newer CPU, it feels like my expectations were a bit outdated. I'm checking my cooling system because the setup I used before was tailored to an older chip. Curious though, if these chips are running at around 90°C more often now, would anything above 95°C be a red flag?

Thanks for the idea. I ran another test after switching my fans to a flat 1600RPM (1550 on exhaust). The CPU stayed around 80°C on average during Cinebench. It seems like adjusting the fan curve for higher temps might be a better approach, especially since the previous settings were based on older CPU expectations. Haha!

Thanks for the update. I believe I’ll be okay in this situation. It seems I’ve uncovered something that’s actually making my CPU run hotter than expected. The motherboard I purchased came with the newest BIOS to support 3D CPUs. For some mysterious reason, MSI set the BIOS to automatically enable the CPU game boost preset. Since I’d been using a Gigabyte board before, I wasn’t familiar with this setting and didn’t suspect it was active until now when I checked the BIOS settings. I’m not sure what this adjustment does, though I’ve read many negative reviews about voltage tweaks and similar issues. The boost mode is now disabled in the BIOS, and I’ve already noticed a significant improvement—before, stress tests would spike the CPU temperature from idle to around 90°C instantly. Now it stays between 70-75°C, and it gradually climbs during longer runs, averaging about 82-85°C. Similar trends appeared in CInebench, and my multi-core scores were better when the setting was off. Overall, it seems like a win for performance despite the concerns.

This setup restricts heat flow between the cores and the IHS. I recently swapped to a 5800X3D using an NZXT Kraken X53, and my system clocks up around 4.15 to 4.25 GHz in Cinebench, with temperatures hovering between 78-82°C depending on furnace operation. If your cooling setup is better, you’ll likely see higher speeds—possibly above 4.2 GHz—and even hotter under full load than my readings. You can confirm this by using PBO Tuner to undervolt it, which makes the CPU run cooler and tricks Precision Boost into thinking you have better cooling. On my rig, I’ve achieved sustained 4.35 GHz after a slight -20°C core undervolt in CB R23, with the same temperature range. Don’t stress too much about temps; just ensure your pump runs at full speed and your radiator fans operate aggressively, aiming for around 70°C max. As long as you’re not pushing these temps during regular use or intense gaming, it should perform well.
