My PC has been experiencing BSODs, stuttering, and frequent shutdowns. I found Crucial Ballistix memory in stock but it’s no longer being produced. Since I haven’t used my computer much since building it in 2017, I’m curious about current recommendations. My current setup is Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3000C15, but I’m not sure if that’s important right now.
CPU is a Ryzen 7 1700X GPU runs on Asus GeForce GTX 1080 RAM comes with Corsair Vengeance LPX (CMK16GX4M2B3000C15) HDD is a WD 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM+ black series drive, PSU uses EVGA G1 650W 80+ Gold AIO, and the case is Corsair H100i V2 Mobo. This old PC was built in 2017; I upgraded it only once to add a SN570 SSD.
the first gen ryzen has a decent imc rating. this suggestion might seem strange, but I’d suggest selling it and buying a used 1700x with one of those older 5600(x) chips that cost under $100 on marketplace sites or classifieds. not just the big jump in performance, but the imc improvement is significant even with fewer cores. imc quality matters a lot, so spending around $50 on a 32gb setup instead of a better option could save you money. you can also consider buying two 8gb sticks with matching ram for a total of 32gb, which would be dual-rank and offer extra speed. it’s probably about $10 per stick if you get OEM green pcbs, though compatibility isn’t guaranteed. i think this is more about imc issues—turning off xmp might help confirm it.
I had already tested with XMP disabled and encountered around 160 errors. I stopped the test early because the number of issues was high. When XMP is active, the BSOD typically occurs (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL). I’m considering your idea about RAM and selling my CPU, though I’m unsure how much value a 7-year-old 1700x chip would fetch.
Rams are missing if they can't run smoothly without errors. For 1700x sell prices, check classified sites for accurate pricing—it really varies by location. In my area, many people are offering outdated models for much less than new ones or older used units. Often, deals are bundled with the motherboard to appear more attractive, since the CPU itself is still superior but the board isn’t as advanced. A decent setup can be made for a sidegrade if you’re targeting markets where mid-range boards like the B450-F, Tomahawk, or Aorus Elite/Pro sell for 50-70$ in places such as the US, UK, or Malaysia.
