I just began assembling a new gaming or workstation PC. The first power supply I put in was an MSI MEG Ai1000P PCIE5 1000 W, but I’m currently missing RAM, drives, and a video card. I connected all the power cables and fans—just to test their operation. The noise was quite loud and could be heard throughout the case. Here’s a video capturing the sound.

Youtube Clip

After such disturbance, I decided to return it and purchase a Thermaltake Toughpower GF3 1200W. Surprisingly, it produced the same noise but with a different tone or pitch. I experimented by unplugging everything except the 24-pin connector on the PSU and used a jump method to test. When I did this, the fan activated and the noise disappeared.

I couldn’t hear anything clearly, so I had to use a light to confirm the fan was running. This wasn’t possible with the original PSU, but I’m wondering if the noise comes from the fans not spinning while trying to start. The fan didn’t turn on at all on either PSU when everything was plugged in.

Specs:
z790 Aorus Master
13900k
z73 Kraken
Lian Li O11D Evo
Thermaltake GF3 1200W

Could the noise I’m hearing be coming from the fans not spinning while trying to power up?

I believe coil whine is often overrated online, especially in forums.
Can you confirm if you can hear it from your sitting position?
I've been building computers for a long time and haven't noticed any coil whine from my chair.

Did you accidentally watch the video? I can hear it clearly from nearby rooms because it's very loud.

I did, that's why I always choose this method. If it bothers you, you can use RMA.

already replaced them and they all make the noise. But they don’t make the noise when I jump it from the 24pin. Just trying to determine if it’s only doing it because the fans aren’t spinning and whether it stops once it boots up with a load. The RMA is pointless since everyone does it.
