New PC options are available, here are some thoughts...
So at the moment, I’m focusing on finding a mobile option first, but if a superior desktop solution exists, I’d prefer that too. I’m coming from a RTX 3080 Ti laptop and am looking for a current-generation or good deal on a strong PC upgrade. My goal is to play at 1440p/2K with high or maximum settings without major problems. At the moment, I’m considering a 5080/90 desktop, a laptop, or a 4090 laptop/desktop. Should I hold off for another month on the 50 series laptops or go ahead and buy an RTX 4090 laptop now at a better price? From what I hear, performance might drop around 15%, especially if comparing the 5080 to the previous generations like the 4080/super. What do you all think? I’m really torn between getting a decent-priced desktop or upgrading my laptop from 3080 Ti to 4090 at a more favorable price right now. Thanks in advance!
US, currently residing in Michigan, I can afford up to 5K if needed, but I prefer not to. Right now, I’m not keen on gaming or focusing on 4K resolution either. I plan to get a new 2K monitor, but I don’t want to stress over FPS or similar issues. Thanks.
Your power supply selection should match your graphics card. Ensure you obtain an ATX 3.1 psu if you choose an Nvidia model. Both the latest Nvidia 50XX line and AMD 97XX series cards are compatible with this board, as noted below.
I’m usually purchasing pre-built units from places like Amazon, Bestbuy, Newegg, etc. I use it for both work and gaming, so it’s not just a gaming PC. I’m leaning toward getting a laptop rather than a desktop. I’ve been researching and feel pretty confident about buying an Alienware m18 R2 RTX 4090 with a 4TB SSD and 64GB RAM for $3399. It should handle most games smoothly at over 100fps in 2k/1440p on high settings. I also considered a 5080 desktop to save money, but a 4090 desktop seems more suitable right now—it offers better performance and extra VRAM compared to the 5080.
Make sure your prebuilt setup has a good PSU, board, and RAM. This is important since many manufacturers reduce costs by using cheaper components. An alternative is Microcenter in Michigan, which assembles PCs based on your selected parts and offers attractive bundles.
Yeah, I love Microcenter, have one right in Westbury near my parents in NY, I used to go there all the time and buy parts, I've also seen that with some 5080 desktops with like a 850w PSU, yeah that's kind of cutting it close I like 1000w a lot more. If there's any good deals or any opinion on which to get, like I said priority is a laptop, but I'm not sure and if it even makes sense to get a 5090 and spend over 5gs to get one when I can get a damn nice 4090 for like 2 grand less and I can get some extras with it also with saving some money, also the 1440p/2k will be great with 4090m it looks like.
A poster discovered a suitable prebuilt unit on another board priced at $2300 on Newegg. The power supply unit had issues, but replacing it would cost around $110 to fix a decent 850W ATX 3.1 PSU. The 5070 Ti performs well even with the 4080 (non-Super), making it a solid choice for 2K gaming.
not focusing on finding fixes or a complete overhaul right now, i just need something solid ready to use without too much hassle. that's why a laptop suits me better, since it balances work and mobility, not for hobbyist projects. for me, the best options are: 1) choose one that saves space and offers mobility with a 4090 laptop, 2) wait and invest more for mobility with a 5090 laptop, 3) opt for a desktop (giving up mobility) with a 4090, or 4) give up on mobility with a 5080 desktop or spend extra for a 5090 desktop.
