I need to figure out if it's better to buy a completely new system or upgrade my current one.
Current Hardware:
- i7-8700K processor
- 32GB DDR4 RAM
- Gigabyte Z370M D3H motherboard
- 500GB SSD
- 1TB HDD

Graphics:
- GeForce 1660 Super

Problem: An accident damaged my HDMI cable, causing a type 45 error with the card. I’m unsure if the GPU, the motherboard area, or both are affected.

I’m wondering if upgrading or building a new system depends on whether DDR4 memory is still reliable in 2024 and beyond. If it is, I might just replace what’s working.

For now, yes, but in about 3 to 4 years at most, and it won't.

DDR4 remains suitable as long as the CPU matches and performance is sufficient. The GPU might benefit from an additional output; a display port can be easily converted to HDMI using a simple adapter.

What's going on? These systems are distinct and don't work backward or forward. For example, a DDR4 motherboard won't support DDR5, and vice versa.

Type 45 error in device manager, I've moved it many times but nothing changed. I don't have another PC at home to check if the issue is with the GPU, the motherboard, or both. I could try the GPU first, but my university work deadline is in three days.

both i5-13600k and 14600k claim to support DD4, yet they have too many cores. By the time I start using them fully, I’d need to remove the CPU and install it in a new motherboard with DDR5.
