New motherboard causing significantly increased temperatures.
Hi everyone. I recently upgraded my setup with a new MSI Mag B560M Mortar and a Deepcool LS520 liquid cooler just for looks. After reassembling, my temperatures jumped significantly—reaching around 90°C during stress tests with Arctic 34. While that’s higher than my previous 70°C on Prime95, it still stays within safe limits and avoids thermal throttling. I also swapped back to an air cooler to check the thermal performance, which hit 100°C with throttling too. My old motherboard was a Gigabyte B560M H, so this setup is definitely working well. What’s happening here? Are there recommended configurations or adjustments I should consider? Thanks for your help!
You previously throttled performance before, causing the VRM on your motherboard to overheat which in turn limited CPU speed. With a newer board featuring improved VRM, it can now supply more power without overheating, allowing the CPU to operate at higher temperatures. To reduce these temperatures, you can either lower the voltage or set a reduced power cap. Undervolting offers less impact on power consumption and temperature, whereas power limiting the chip will decrease performance.
Did your CPU perform better than anticipated after installing the previous motherboard? I’m here to clarify whether you’ve unlocked the Kraken.
Generally speaking, yes. When checking the real power usage reported by software on both boards, the Mortar tends to draw significantly more power than the Gigabyte board during full loads (about 50% higher, though the gap could be larger). Running Cinebench between them will also show a clear performance difference.
I just looked at the numbers—D2V should support a 65W power cap, and exceeding that input could raise temperatures by about 30°C.
